    Darwen was a centre for textile manufacture during the Industrial Revolution like towns in Lancashire. From 1878, the Darwen municipal borough existed for years. Renamed Blackburn with Darwen in 1997, before it became a unitary authority, of the Blackburn Lancashire district that is non-metropolitan, the town became part.

The coat of arms used by the unitary authority of Blackburn with Darwen, which is the coat of arms for Blackburn, should not be confused with Darwen's. Whilst a build was completed on the original site, Darwen Vale High School was temporarily moved to the Moorland site.

It forms with Darwen the Blackburn Borough - a unitary authority area, along with northerly neighbour, Blackburn.

    St Peter's, an Anglican church consecrated in 1829, is the Parish Church of Darwen. Urns containing human ashes and a bronze dagger were artefacts found, and, at Darwen Library Theatre, on display are a number of these finds. As Darwen Etrurians CC playing at Barley Bank, Cricket Club of Darwen in the late 1800s was founded, as the town has a strong cricketing tradition.
